This is our first post on the Electrolux Future InSight blog, a forum we’ve designed to explore questions about the challenges of the future, and our role in tackling them.

Taking a strategic approach to sustainability means grappling with some very tricky questions about climate change, constrained resources, globalization, and human rights to name a few. At Electrolux, we want engage you in conversation about how these issues impact our business. We want to update you on the progress we’re making across our company. And we want to explore with you how we can grow as a company by engaging in them.

Keith McLoughlin, CEO of Electrolux set the tone of our ambition during a conversation with Tessa Tennant, Chair of GlobalCool.org, and leading sustainability thinker. “There are some big issues here and things are moving fast. For Electrolux and sustainability, we have to have a point of view in terms of the future and how we are going to operate,” says McLoughlin in the conversation.

Building the market for highly efficient products and making them accessible to emerging markets. Our role as a global company. How our appliances can contribute to the debate on sustainable consumption of food, water and other constrained resources. These are just snapshots of the challenges that lie ahead for Electrolux. We’re not going to find the solutions on our own and we’re not going to find them looking back in time. But we will find them by understanding the changes that lie before us and engaging you in the solutions.

In 2009, we started a process internally within Electrolux to look at how we can integrate sustainability more deeply into our business. In 2010, we brought our findings to Group Management and launched the sustainability strategy platform, comprising three pillars: Operational Efficiency, Product Excellence and Engaging in Society.

This is only the beginning. In the years ahead, we will continue to build on this platform by defining targets, launching new products and finding new, more efficient ways of working. This will be informed by your feedback and through conversation with key people like you in our value chain. We’re looking forward to your insights.
