Taking expertise from one region to another is part of what international mobility at Electrolux is all about. For Tomas Dahlman, moving from Stockholm, Sweden to Charlotte, USA has meant not only learning the...

Having worked for two different functions in four countries over the past seven years, Kristoffer Ljungfelt proves that mobility within Electrolux is limited only by how far one wants to go.
What is your background in Electrolux?
I originally joined Electrolux as Controller for Electrolux Professional Laundry Systems in Copenhagen, after studying Business Administration at Lund University. I then held the positions of Factory Controller for Professional Laundry (Odense, Denmark), Sales Controller Professional Laundry (Pordenone, Italy) and then Group Business Controller in Stockholm.

What attracted you to your current position (Operations Development Manager, Electrolux Major Appliances Asia Pacific, based in Singapore)?
I think three main things: One, the fast-growing markets and the vast opportunities to grow if you make the right moves and invest in the right products. Two, the chance to build an efficient structure and world-class processes in order to support a growing sector. And three, a chance to see Asian culture from the inside and get to know Asian consumer behavior, which is very different from what I was used to in Europe.
You changed sectors within Electrolux. What skills did you feel you have brought with you that you think will benefit you in the new area?
After having worked in different parts of the organization, I believe I have managed to get a good understanding of the entire value chain. Now, I feel I am in a good position to identify strengths and weaknesses in different business models.
You have changed continents and are now living in Asia. What’s benn most exciting? Most difficult?
The most exiting aspect by far has been getting to know a new culture, especially when you have someone to experience it with (be it a wife, kids, new friends, etc). I always tell my local colleagues that I will try anything they recommend. This has resulted in many interesting (and sometimes painful) experiences. I now enjoy having fish-head curry for lunch, but I still cannot appreciate having durian fruit in the backyard of the Singapore office!
The most difficult part is getting the everyday needs figured out, as you simply don’t have a network built up for those things. For instance, you have to solve issues like “Where do you get your broken stereo fixed?” “Who do you call if the roof is leaking?” And honestly, I don’t think I would survive in a country that did not have an IKEA.
What new cultural adjustments have you had to make or learn (business etiquette, language learning, etc.)
I think the corporate culture of Electrolux is mostly the same, regardless of where you are located. But there are issues like language and the length of the work day that do come into play.
Regarding cultural aspects, I have even found that something as simple as drinking coffee can differ a lot, and sometimes it can make all the difference (believe it or not). In Italy, important decisions are often made over a cup of coffee ,and in Scandinavia you can get reprimands from your colleagues if you forget to bring the “baked treats” when you are supposed to.
What are you most looking forward to in your new position?
Winning consumers in China and Southeast Asia!
Sometimes big changes are brought about by seemingly "little" ideas. For instance: How can you cut down on the number of scratches and dents on appliances coming off the factory floor? Silicon strips on...
