What was the greatest invention of the industrial revolution? In a vivid TED lecture held in Washington, DC, recently the renowned Swedish medical doctor, academic and public speaker Hans Rosling makes the case for the washing machine.
Hans Rosling has achieved global recognition for his unortodox and theatrical way of presenting human progress in the globalized world. Rosling’s current work focuses on dispelling common myths about the so-called developing world, which he points out is no longer worlds away from the West.
Rosling begins his TED lecture by remembering the day his mother got her first washing machine in the 1950′s (which by the way was an Electrolux Wascator machine). Then he points out that many millions have had the same euphoric experience all over the world in the last decades. Finally he shows the magic that pops up when economic growth and electricity turn a boring wash day into an intellectual day of reading.
